My experience with hosting and a note about hosting payment method.
I was using Paypal to automatically pay my monthly hosting subscription. For about $7 a month I could host unlimited sites, I had over 40 on this account.
My Paypal account was associated with 2 credit cards, each with several thousand dollars available, and there was always $50 to $150 cash in the account as well.
One memorable day, I received an email from Paypal saying that my subscription payment had been suspended. I had forgotten to update the expiration date on the card that guarantees the subscription payment.
Note that the subscription payment was always paid from the cash balance and never from the credit card. Note also that the credit card was perfectly alright, i had simply not updated the info with Paypal. If they had notified me that it was necessary to do so, I'm sure I would have done it. I may have missed their email or it may have looked like a phishing email and I deleted it. I don't know. Surely they sent me an email saying the card needed updating. Note also that the second card was perfectly alright as well and up to date with at least three thousand dollars available.
But Paypal, in their infinite stupidity saw fit to cancel my $7 a month subscription payment. My hosting subscription payment, that is. Apparently they notified my webhost as well because by the next morning, all my sites were down. All 44 of them. Even though there should have been 7 more days paid up, this was on about the 24th of the month, autopay was always on the 1st.
I gotta admit that the webhost was basically terrible and I hadn't changed for dreading moving all those sites. Email and site connectivity was becoming more and more undependable, especially on the weekends. And support was nonexistant. If you are sadomasochistic, you may avail of their webhost -sic- services here-

But I don't recommend it.
The lesson I learned is that as usual, anything can happen and probably will. I now prepay for a year and I now refuse to use a webhost without 24/7 phone support. At the time I signed up at Premium Reseller, they were a bargain but competition being what it is bargains are more plentiful now. And too, bargains, much like beauty, are in the eyes of the beholders and cheapskates. Yup, that was me!
I tried Godaddy and am not satisfied with their plan at all. No cpanel. Godaddy has their own site management tool which might be alright. But I just prefer cpanel. Also email accounts are limited and extra ones are $13 per year as of this writing, 6-29-2010. Oh, and the Godaddy menu system is the absolute pits! I can never find anything on that site in less that 4 attempts.
But their domain registration is still top notch and that will remain in place. Unless they read this and boot me out. LOL.
Looks like Hostgator is going to be the new webhost and I haveta go now. Got 43 more sites to move. Again.
Yours truly,
Webmaster Bill
