Free Domain Names
It has been correctly pointed out to me that there are indeed free domain names to be had. The way to this is to use a host where you can have subdomains. If you sell widgets, you can create subdomains such as bluewidgets.yourdomain.com, redwidgets.yourdomain.com, polkadotwidgets.yourdomain.com, or even nakedwidgets.yourdomain.com. On all of the hosts I have ever used these subdomains will show as subdirectories, yourdomain.com/redwidgets/(index.html) etc. Carrying this a little further, you could have several totally unrelated domains under yourdomain.com. /Widgets, /gumballs, /carparts, and /wargames. So there are indeed free domains to be had, limited only by the names already in use. Can you have subdomains under subdomains? Dunno, never tried. You try and let me know, k?
An upside to all this is that subdomains are considered individual domains by the search engines. Gumballs.yourdomain.com and wargames.yourdomain.com can each have their own keywords and will be indexed independently of each other. With some planning and thought, this is a way to have one of those million dollar domain names such as sex.yourdomain.com. It's already being done and works to varying degrees. Something like yahoo.yourdomain.com is treading on copyright infringement and not recommended. And I've heard that those m i c r o s . . . lawyers are the absolute pits!
Another upside is that the cost of all these subdomains is zero after the cost of your original domain. You only have to have a webhost that supports subdomains, the more the merrier. A webhost that allows only 2 subdomains isn't going to help you very much.
But, please realize that there are no longer any free top level .com, .net, or .org domain name deals out there. Many hosting companies will give you a 'free' (top level) domain name tied to a hosting package, usually $35 a year, provided of course that your chosen name is still available. I personally have had more trouble with these package deals than I could swear at, especially come time to sell the domain or transfer registrars. I now prefer to buy a domain name for as cheap as I can with a reliable registrar, I like GoDaddy.com, and then buy hosting as cheap as I can with a reliable hosting company. The arteries have benefitted much. Hope this helps someone.

Active Domain.com - Registration is as low as $8.50 per year. They offer your own account manager, free parking with an 'Under Construction' page, up to 250 free email forwarding addresses and sub-domains (www.mail.yourname.com), redirect them to any other email address. A free email catch-all account. Your choice of free cloaked or uncloaked redirection, and free ownership transfer. The site is easy to navigate and has several great how-to pages as well as a searchable 'expired domains' section and a list of 'suspended' (available) names. Lots of bells and whistles here!
Cheap Domain Registration - This is as close to a free domain name as I can find nowadays. If you transfer a domain name to Cheap Domain Registration for $7.75, you will receive a one-year extension for free. Or, register a .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, or .us for $8.75 / year or less for 2 years or more. Register a .ws for only $14.00 per year for a minimum of 2 years. Excellent help and FAQ sections and a phone number. They offer free parking, free forwarding, and free transfer of ownership. They also offer forwarding with masking, email, and hosting. Also a free domain name finder and analyzer. Did I mention excellent help and FAQ sections and a phone number?
Cleverdot.com - Nearly the same as above. If you transfer a domain name to CleverDot.com Domain Registration for $7.77, you will receive a one-year extension for free. They also offer hosting starting at $3.95. Also a free domain name finder.
NameZero.com - Get one free .com/.net/.org domain name and email account with unlimited aliases. Namezero will pay the domain name's Internic fee for 1 year initially, and then continue to pay the fee each year if the member is in good standing. The domain name is registered in their name, and you may buy the domain name at any time. Namezero places a frame with advertising at the bottom of your website (see example at Free Webspaces). They reserve the right to cancel service for any reason. There may be several weeks delay after signup.
